Mummy Guilt

The Ups, Downs and In-betweens of ……..

This is a blog written by a variety of people living and parenting in Gloucestershire today and sharing the ups downs and in-betweens of real family life.

……. Mum – who me?

questions-1308019“Mummy Guilt.” It’s a thing…we all suffer from it. When you’re pregnant people warn you about the sleepless nights, the dirty nappies, the permanently empty wallet and the mess all the time.

What no one tells you about is the guilt. Am I feeding them right? Are they watching too much TV? Should I spend that much on another piece of noisy plastic? Does everyone else’s Mum in year 5 really let them stay up till 9:30pm on a school night? It’s attached to everything…big issues and small and it’s exhausting!!

The thing is this guilt is suffered by every parent (Dads too!) every day.  We are all constantly berating ourselves on what we should or shouldn’t do, what we could have done better or whatever.  Worryingly, my mother in law assures me it doesn’t stop when they leave home or get married or even when they hit 40!!  She still worries constantly now.

communicate-4-1241867I know that I am far from a perfect parent (just ask my 9 year old!) but I also know that I am doing my absolute best to muddle through this parenting lark.  There are no rules or protocol, no instruction manual and no revision notes.  You have to go with your gut and find your way with your child hand in hand through this adventure called life.

I’ve been writing this sat on the driveway in the car whilst the 3 year old sleeps in the back…. Oh man! I bet he’s spent more than the recommended time limit in a car seat now…. something else to add to the guilt list!!!!
